Mechanical Design of Turbine Blades in Renewable Wind Technology
In Project One, we were placed in an engineering design team that contributes to green (renewable energy) technology. As part of a larger engineering group, our team particularly was focused on designing a turbine blade component inside a wind turbine, by considering its mechanical properties and performance. Although our team’s design was focused on a blade as the main component, we gained knowledge of wind turbines, in general, as its technology and design considerations of wind turbine were inevitable to be successful in our turbine blade design.

Design a System for Sterilizing Surgical Tools Using Remote Sensing and Actuation
In Project Two, we worked in teams to design a system for securely transferring a surgical instrument to an autoclave for sterilization. The project introduced us to principles of rapid prototyping (i.e., 3D printing) and physical computing. As a team, we designed a computer program for controlling movement of a robotic arm to pick up and transfer a container for sterilization. We also designed and prototyped the container such that it can securely hold a surgical instrument in place during transfer.

Design a System for Sorting and Recycling Containers
In Project Three, we worked in teams to design a system for sorting and recycling containers of varying materials. This project introduced us to principles of smart devices and assembly modelling as we designed a computer program for controlling robotic devices and fabricated a mechanism for depositing the containers into a recycling bin. It was expected that our design successfully classified containers using data from the physical environment, analyzed the container for contamination, and transfered the container to the correct bin for recycling.

Some Gardens Grow in Hope
In Project Four, we were in an engineering design team that focused on a real-world issue that a client in the community faces. Our team was required to come up with a solution that makes the client’s daily living better. To do this, our team delved into the design space through the levels of the Engineering Design Process. First, we determined the design requirements (i.e., function, constraints, and objectives) through problem framing and design exploration. Next, we developed an initial prototype that centers on user interaction and is based on the design requirements. The design reviews will provided us with feedback to improve and iterate our prototypes. We also developed a testing plan for our prototype. Lastly, we will developed a final design that embodied the lessons learned from every step of the design process and will presented our final proposed design to the client and peers.
